TRIZ in Thailand

TRIZ
TRIZ in Thailand
By Trizit Benjaboonyazit

Introduction
Thailand has enjoyed steady economic growth even though there may have been some confrontation in political ideology among Thai people. Recently, the Theory of Innovative Thinking (TRIZ) was proposed in Thailand to solve the conflict of political ideology in Thailand. The idea of consolidation (inventive principle number five) was used to set up a national government.

TRIZ in Thailand
The story of TRIZ was introduced to Thai industries around the year 2000. There were articles written about TRIZ that were published in the journal of the Technology Promotion Association (Thailand–Japan) (TPA). The Theory of Innovative Thinking was formally introduced to Thailand in 2002 when the TPA translated and published the first TRIZ book on the 40 inventive principles and the second TRIZ book titled Introduction to TRIZ in 2004. With the cooperation from the TRIZ Center, the SANNO Institute of Management of Japan (where Shinsuke Kurosawa was a TRIZ specialist at SANNO) was invited to conduct a workshop seminar on classical and contemporary TRIZ at the TPA. This workshop was held a total of four times from 2005 through 2008 with hundreds of participants from more than 100 companies. The TPA also organized a study mission to Japan where in 2006 and 2007 the Product and Process Innovation by TRIZ invited more than 30 participants to visit SANNO and its factories to learn more about TRIZ in Japanese industries.

The Theory of Innovative Thinking has been gradually gaining momentum in Thailand. More and more engineers and others are talking about TRIZ today. They have joined together in a TRIZ community through a Thailand Web site to discuss and practice problem solving using TRIZ tools. Many companies are implementing TRIZ in the workplace to solve problems on new product development and process improvement. One of them is the Siam Cement Group (SCG) who sent its TRIZ team to participate and present TRIZ for the SCG at the International TRIZ Symposium in Japan (2007). The Federation of Thai Industries has also been providing regular TRIZ training for its members.

Apart from the widespread knowledge of TRIZ in the industrial sector, TRIZ has also been introduced to the educational sector and government agencies. Workshop seminars based on TRIZ have been conducted for more than 500 high school teachers involved in the Ministry of Education. Many universities have integrated TRIZ into its master degree programs on business administration and innovation management curriculum. Government agencies have also promoted and supported TRIZ. The National Science & Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) has provided TRIZ training for their researchers and the National Innovation Agency (NIA) has supported the TPA in publishing a new TRIZ book titled Creativity Development by TRIZ (2007) and has also provided case studies of innovation for the book.

Professor Phan Dzung and the dream to popularise TRIZ

TRIZ10:19' 19/02/2007 (GMT+7)
VietNamNet Bridge - As the first Vietnamese to receive a PhD in experimental physics in 1973, Phan Dung might still be walking on the physical road if he hadn’t studied TRIZ with professor Altshuller.

Genrich Altshuller (photo: wikipedia)
During his college years in Russia, Dung was one of the 6 Vietnamese students chosen to study TRIZ with Genrich Altshuller, the father of the subject itself.

TRIZ is a Russian acronym for "Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch" ,Theory of Solving Inventive Problems, developed by professor Altshuller and his colleagues since 1946. TRIZ is a methodology for generating innovative ideas and problem-solving solutions. In contrast to techniques such as brainstorming, TRIZ aims to create an algorithmic approach to the invention of new systems.

Dung was attracted by the creative and scientific problem solving and reasoning approaches of this strange subject. The PhD graduate returned home, determined to develop this subject in Vietnam.

Time to get creative

TRIZForeign languages and information technology are often touted as the way forward for Vietnamese students in a competitive, interconnected world. But, there is a smaller movement that puts creativity first and is changing the lives of a growing number of students and teachers.

Tran Thi Thu Ha was really, really bored.
The 25-year-old student at the primary education faculty of the Hanoi Teacher Training University spent months twiddling her thumbs and looking at the clock until she joined a creativity methodology (CM) course taught by Duong Xuan Bao.
"My confidence has really turned around and I feel like I've regained my love for life. To be quite honest I was a bit lost before the course, but now I've rediscovered myself," she said in her final essay which she treated as a private letter to her teacher.
Bao has taught CM since 1977 and describes the course as a chance for students and teachers to solve problems by learning from past experiences and investigating practical ways of finding a solution.
"There is no subject quite like it. Our university system puts so much focus on natural and social sciences, but the science of thought is what will take us into the next century.
"Education here in Vietnam is quite rigid and does not encourage creativity, diversity and independent thinking. Few of our students gain high marks in mathematical creativity problems.
"In this world full of tough competition, creativity is vital. But there are so many Vietnamese companies that simply produce the same things produced elsewhere in the world. They need to change their designs and come up with newer, more specific ideas.
"Scientific research shows the age at which humans are their most creative is around 14, after which we tend to settle into routines of thought. Creativity, however, can also be learned and practised.

TRIZ IMPROVEMENT OF ROTARY COMPRESSOR Design

TRIZA rotary compressor with variable capacity is used in air conditioners. An air conditioner
is a key product of mass production of Digital Appliance Business of Samsung
Electronics Company. Therefore the improvement of design and reliability of air
conditioners leads to expansion of the sale and helps the company to preserve leadership
position in the worldwide market. In this article the real industrial problem related to
removing harmful interaction between compressor components “shaft-pin-double cam-
roller-cylinder” and destruction problem of driving pin and cam bush were solved with
ARIZ application. It is considered to use into the applied algorithm some new approaches
and statements for reforming initial customer’s problem in the line of the future solutions.
The development of different new designs of the compressor and its latching mechanism
with the aid of applied ARIZ has been analyzed. The outcome of this work obtained with
using applied logical algorithm tools are 21 concept solutions combined in 9 international
and national patents and application of some of them in mass production of the company
with annual income about $10 Million. This article could be useful for TRIZ users like
real case study with measured results and how ARIZ was used to develop the solutions.

Theory of Inventive Problem Solving

TRIZ is the Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. It is a proven algorithmic approach to solving system problems. TRIZ began in 1946 when the Russian engineer and scientist Genrich Altshuller discovered that the evolution of a system is not a random process, but rather is governed by certain objective laws. THE TRADEMARK "TPN3 TRIZ" IS ABOLISHED

TRIZ

THE TRADEMARK TPN3 TRIZ" IS ABOLISHED

The trademark "ÒÐÈÇ TRIZ" was abolished by the Board for Patent Disputes on Trademark "ТРИЗ TRIZ" (certificate of registration No. 251307), previously registered in the name of public association "MATRIZ" (International TRIZ Association), Petrozavodsk, Russia (President Rubin M.S.) is abolished.

The decision was made on December 8, 2004 by the "Board for Patent Disputes of the Federal Executive Agency for intellectual property of the Russian Federation". The decision was made based on an Objection against protection of this trademark filed by the successors to copyrights of Genrikh Saulovich Altshuller [10.15.1926-09.24.1998] ( www.altshuller.ru/biography in Russian), the creator of the theory of inventive problem solving (ÒÐÈÇ/TRIZ): a noted science-fiction writer and Altshuller's widow Valentina Nikolaevna Zhuravleva [07.17.1933-03.12.2004] and Yuna Evgenievna Komarcheva (www.altshuller.ru/world/eng/vested.asp).

In the objection it was pointed out that the registration of the trademark "ÒÐÈÇ TRIZ" was put into practice in violation of current laws: Civil Code of Russian Federation (RF), RF law "On trademarks, service marks and place of origin of goods", as well as Paris Convention on protection of industrial property.

However, G.S. Altshuller was of the opinion that TRIZ monopolization is inadmissible, that TRIZ, as scientific creation, must belong to the entire humankind, that it should have no borders, and that it is impossible for a single entity to hold the only true standard. We observe here that in his noted work "Life strategy of creative individual" G.S. Altshuller repeatedly foretold the possibility of unseemly actions by “disciples”. An application for trademark “ÒÐÈÇ TRIZ” was filed three years after passing of the author of TRIZ. This application was filed by the management of the public organization “MATRIZ” in secret from the successors of the Author of TRIZ. Neither their opinion nor the Author’s wishes were taken into consideration.

Beginning in October 2003 Valentina Nikolaevna Zhuravleva made numerous attempts to contact the said public organization in order to obtain necessary clarifications. However, “MATRIZ” officials refused to discuss this issue. In addition, the attorneys from the law firm “Uskov and Partners” (www.uskov.ru in Russian), patent attorneys for Valentina Nikolaevna, attempted to contact officials of the said organization by phone and by mail for several months.

Since these attempts did not meet with success, in January 2004 Valentina Nikolaevna prepared two open letters, in which she informed the public of the act of piracy. She also suggested “MATRIZ” to take voluntary steps to abolish the trademark. These letters received wide support from scientific community. The Objection was filed with the Board for Patent Disputes on February 25th, 2004. Unfortunately, Valentina Nikolaevna did not live to see the day when the justice was restored. She passed away on March 12th, 2004. Vadim Uskov, manager of the law firm “Uskov and Partners” (www.uskov.ru in Russian), represented Altshuller’s family at the Board for Patent Disputes.

The distinctive feature of this event is the fact that the Official Foundation of G.S. Altshuller intends to fulfill G.S. Altshuller’s and V.N. Zhuravleva’s will and not register this trademark to itself, because the Author of TRIZ viewed this as inadmissible. Therefore, it was not a dispute for the right to the trademark, but a dispute for the right of every individual or organization to freely use TRIZ.

The Official Foundation of G.S. Altshuller simultaneously states that any individual or organization, which will make an attempt to patent words “ÒÐÈÇ” or “TRIZ”, will be responsible for that. Be sure G.S. Altshuller’s Foundation will take care of it.

Altshuller’s Foundation thanks from the bottom of our hearts all the Colleagues who countenanced Altshuller’s legacy, who supported Valentina Nikolaevna Zhuravleva in her quest to abolish this trademark.

Special thanks to Igor Leonardovich Vikentiev, Sergey Valerievich Sychyov, Vadim Valerievich Uskov, consulting companies “TRIZ-CHANCE”, “Sychyov and Co Ltd.”, law firm “USKOV and Partners", for moral and active support, for large volume of difficult, yet necessary efforts, for participation in Board for Patent Disputes’ meetings, representing Altshuller’s family.

Full text of the Objection, which served as the basis for trademark abolishment could be found here (in Russian) in.pdf format. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader (you may load it here).

Official G.S. Altshuller Foundation

TRIZ5 March 2004

PRESS RELEASE
Official G.S. Altshuller Foundation
www.altshuller.ru

On February 25, 2004, Valentina Nikolaevna Zhuravleva – the well known science-fiction writer and widow of Genrikh Saulovich Altshuller (15 October 1926 – 24 September 1998), the developer of the Theory of Invention Problem Solving (TRIZ) and Juna Evgenievna Komarcheva – filed a complaint against the issuance of the TRIZ trademark with the Patent Dispute Chamber of the Russian Federal Intellectual Property Administration.

The trademark was registered on 40 of the 42 classes of the International Classification of Goods and Services on July 11, 2003, on behalf of the MATRIZ Association (M.S. Rubin, director), with registration No. 251307, based on application No. 2001738708 with priority, filed December 19, 2001.

It is the view of V.N. Zhuravleva that this registration is in violation of the law. Specifically:

1. The registration of said trademark is in contradiction of the requirements of Article 6, Part 1, Paragraph 3 of the Russian Federal Law "On trademarks, service marks and product origins" (hereafter, the "Law") and point 2.3.2.2 of the "Rules on compiling, filing and reviewing applications for the registration of trademarks and service marks," (hereafter, the "Rules") as "the registration as trademarks generally accepted symbols or terms is not permitted";

2. The registration of said trademark is in contradiction of the requirements of Article 7, Part 2, Paragraph 3 of the Law and Part 2.10 of the Rules, as "designations identical … to the names of works of science, literature or art … well known in the Russian Federation at the date of application may not be registered as trademarks";

3. The decision to register said trademark is also in violation of the requirements provided in Chapter 6, Part 1 of the Law and Part 2.3.1 of the Rules, as the registered trademark is not distinguishable;

4. The registration of said trademark is in contradiction of the basic requirement of Article 1 of the Law, namely, trademarks may not serve to individualize goods;

5. The registration of said trademark is in contradiction of Article 10-bis of the Paris Convention, according to which: "Countries of the Union are obligated to accord citizens of countries participating in the Union effective defense against unfair competition. Any act of competition in contradiction of the honest traditions of industrial and trading affairs is considered an act of unfair competition";

6. The registration of said trademark was carried out with the goal of ‘blocking-off’, which is an abuse of rights and is forbidden by Article 10 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation.

Moreover, while TRIZ developer G.S. Altshuller was still alive, he repeatedly stated that TRIZ, as a science, must belong to all. He said that TRIZ must have no limitations. It is impossible to concentrate a single, authentic model in one pair of hands. He believed the monopolization of TRIZ to be unallowable.

The application for the registration of the trademark on TRIZ was filed three years after the death of TRIZ’s developer. The application was filed by the directors of the MATRIZ Association secretly, without informing the heirs of TRIZ’s developer. No inquiry was made as to their opinion, nor as to the will of the developer.

Starting in October 2003, Valentina Nikolaevna Zhuravleva repeatedly attempted to make contact with the above-mentioned organization in order to seek clarification. However, officials of MATRIZ refused to discuss matters. In addition, over the course of several months, patent attorneys from the legal firm Uskov & Partners (www.uskov.ru), retained by Valentina Nikolaevna Zhuravleva, attempted to make contact with MATRIZ officials, both in written and oral form.

As none of these efforts met with success, in January 2004 Valentina Nikolaevna Zhuravleva prepared two open letters, in which she informed the public of this act of piracy and suggested that MATRIZ voluntarily take steps to annul the trademark. These letters received a tremendous response and the broad support of the scientific community.

A reply from MATRIZ, finally, proposed holding negotiations, but not about annulling the trademark.

All of these events, taken together, prompted the complaint to the Patent Dispute Chamber.

The members of G.S. Altshuller’s family express their gratitude to all who have supported and continue to support their efforts.
